Project
Proposal: The MetaArchive project proposes an initial investigation
of a cooperative model of peer institutions partnering for digital preservation
purposes. This cooperative will build a network of collaborating institutions
acting to preserve a corpus of critical cultural heritage content available
only in digital forms. This preservation network will use the LOCKSS software,
a major new system for distributed preservation of digital content. Collaborative
partnership models based on this approach may be the best hope for successful
digital preservation of our cultural heritage.
Scope Document: This document provides a brief overview of the scope of this project, which was shaped by a discussion of what constitutes Southern culture and history, the formats and types of materials that would be included, and a brief discussion of what is meant by “at risk.” These discussions informed our choice of materials to inventory and include in the MetaArchive project.
Conspectus Schema: This document charts and defines in detail the thirty-five categories of metadata collected for each record within the MetaArchive collection-level conspectus metadata specification.
Harvest Plan: This document describes the plan for conducting the initial and subsequent harvesting activities of the MetaArchive of Southern Digital Culture Project. Harvesting activities primarily include both 1) preparatory creation of required LOCKSS manifests and 2) the activation of the harvesting process in the individual site installations. This document makes reference to the project plan and other project documents which provide more details about other aspects of the project.

This interim report summarizes the tentative notes on findings of the group to date concerning the Cooperative Agreement, and identifies questions that the working group has discussed. This document makes reference to the project plan and other project documents which provide more details about other aspects of the project.
Charter Agreement: This document is a draft of the charter agreement for the MetaArchive preservation network. It includes an analysis and articulation of the collaborative paradigm that this project is producing. This document is designed such that it can serve as a model and template for other groups of institutions seeking to replicate this group’s approach to distributed digital preservation.
